THE FIRST SESSION
For counseling services, the client phones for an appointment for an intake session; in our home office. The first session may be a 50 to 90 minutes session depending upon the need of the client and the judgment of the therapist. Preliminary demographic information is obtained in this first session, followed by a clinical interview and disclosure of pertinent social history applicable to the client’s presenting issue. This same process is put into motion for individual, marital, relationship or conjoint therapy. Together, following the social history/ clinical interview, at the end of this first session, the client and the therapist, after having identified and named the specific issues, will agree upon a specific plan for subsequent sessions.
Typically, counseling sessions are 50 minutes sessions on a weekly basis. Sometimes, due to the severity or urgency of a presenting problem, it may become necessary to schedule more frequent sessions. It is the goal of the therapist to help the client resolve problems as soon as possible. As progress is made, the number and frequency of sessions decrease. The therapist and client set a mutually agreed upon criteria to judge the progress toward the resolution of problems. In the event that minimal progress is being made, and prior to a final termination session, a referral to other professional services may be considered. Though a successful resolution to an issue may not be guaranteed, expert, experienced, quality counseling is always offered.
